On November 21st 2008 ATTIKO METRO S.A. proceeded to the re-procurement of the project related to Line 3 Metro extension to the Western Suburbs, terminating in the area of Piraeus (underground tunnel, 7.6 km long, with 6 modern stations: Aghia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus, Dimotiko Theatro).

On February 13th 2009, 6 technical consortia/joint ventures expressed their interest in the construction of the project. On October 5th 2011, ATTIKO METRO S.A. proceeded to the unsealing of the Financial Offers for the Project concerning the extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus.

The classification order of the three bidding joint ventures, based on their Financial Offer, is as follows:

Based on the aforementioned Tender results, J&P – ΑVΑX S.A. – GHELLA SPA – ALSTOM TRANSPORT SA is the lowest-bidder of the Tender.

On March 1st 2012, the relevant contract was signed with the contracting joint venture J&P – AVAX S.A., GHELLA SPA, ALSTROM TRANSPORT S.A for the construction of Line 3 extension from Aghia Marina to Piraeus, 7.6 km long in total, with 6 modern Metro Stations. Attiko Metro S.A. was represented by Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman of the BoD and Managing Director, while the Construction Joint Venture J&P ΑVAX SA was represented by Mr. Konstantinos Mitzalis, Managing Director.

This Project constitutes a 730,000,000 EURO investment in areas of Piraeus Municipalities and other Municipalities in the wider area (Nikea, Korydallos, Aghia Varvara), which are currently faced with acute traffic problems and sub-standard services, in terms of Public Transport Modes.

The Metro Extension to Piraeus will serve approximately 132,000 passengers on a daily basis, while the distance between the Port and the International Airport will be covered by the Metro in just 45 minutes. Additionally, once the Metro becomes operational, the number of vehicles will be reduced by approximately 23,000 on a daily basis, leading to a respective daily reduction in CO2 by 120 tn.

Especially as regards Piraeus Station, a major Transportation Junction will emerge, connecting the two Metro Lines (Line 1 and Line 3), the Port, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway, which is also foreseen to pass through the same area, providing, thus, inter-modal transfers.

The Metro tunnel will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in order to minimize the inevitable disturbance to the functions of the Municipalities; during the construction period (2012-2017) 2,000 persons in total are foreseen to be employed in this Project.

The extension of the Tramway from Neo Faliro to Piraeus centre recently commenced, completing, thus, the direct connection of the coastal axis with Piraeus through the Tramway network. More specifically, in January 2013 the contract was signed between ATTIKO METRO S.A. and the Company THEMELI S.A.

Apart from the Line 3 Extension to Piraeus, ATTIKO METRO S.A will shortly be engaged in the following projects as well, namely:

  1. Extension of the Tramway network from Neo Faliro to Piraeus centre, completing, thus, the direct connection of the coastal axis with Piraeus through the Tramway. The construction of this specific project commenced in September 2013 by ATTIKO METRO.
  2. Conversion of Line 1 (ISAP) section form N.Faliro to Piraeus into an underground structure, with the addition of one new station in the area of Keranis Factory, unifying, in terms of functions and town planning the areas of Piraeus currently served by the surface ISAP Line 1. The designs pertaining to this Project are about to be completed enabling, thus, ATTIKO METRO S.A. to put it to Tender.
  3. Extension to the Tramway Network to Keratsini – Perama, following an underground alignment at a large part of Keratsini Municipality, running along the alignment of the old Perama tramway. The Advanced Concept Designs regarding this Project are underway.

Tunnel

6,5km of the tunnel of the extension will be constructed using the Tunnel Boring Machine, while the remaining parts at the beginning and at the end of the project will be constructed via the underground excavation method.

Shafts

8 ventilation shafts in total shall be constructed along the new Line and two shafts for the TBM’s entering/exiting.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

August 2016

  • Komninou Shaft: The works for the worksite installations (building crane, settlement tank installation) are in progress.
  • AGHIA VARVARA Station: The works for the construction of slabs at all levels are completed.
    At M. Alexandrou Shaft, completed is the worksite installation, while in progress are excavation and temporary retaining works.
  • NIKEA Station: The works for the construction of non-bearing masonry walls at the ticketing level and the masonry plastering works at the platform level slab are in progress. Works for the construction of the main station permanent lining (stage B) are still being continued together with the works for the construction of the outer perimeter walls from the platform level slab up to the ticketing level slab between axes B-D and 13-14.
    At the northern entrance, the works for the construction of the permanent lining of a section of the foundation slab of the C/C entrances in the area on either side of piles P 145-150 and P 151-156 are in progress.
  • MANIATIKA Station: In the C/C section of the station and the ventilation shafts, the construction of the pile cap beam and the piles of the main building of the station has been completed.
    At Mela Shaft, activities pertaining to the archaeological trenches and the reinstatement of the shaft are completed.
  • PIRAEUS Station: Completed are the works for the diversion of an Φ630 sewage pipe, while in progress are the construction of guide-walls.
  • DIMOTIKO THEATRO Station: In the main station, in Aghiou Konstantinou Square, the works for the concreting of the concourse slab are completed, while in progress are the formwork related activities at the slab of the E/M floor (level -1).
    In the underground section of the station, the vault waterproofing works are completed, while in progress are the works for the reinforcement of the vault.
    At the entrance to Bakogianni Square, retaining works for the 3rd level are in progress.
    In the NATM triple track tunnel towards the University of Piraeus, Phase D’ excavation works (INVERT) are in progress (excavation progress: 9/140m.).
    In the NATM triple track tunnel towards DIMOTIKO THEATRO, Phase C’ excavation works (BENCH) are completed (excavation progress: 63/63m).
    At Deligianni Shaft, the works for the excavation and temporary retaining of the final level are in progress.
    At Panepistimio Shaft, the construction of trenches for the diversions of PPC network.
    The tunnel excavation has been completed by 59.07%.

  • AGHIA VARVARA Station: The works for the removal of the precast segments of the false tunnel and the last ring have been completed. Works for the industrial floors and fillings are in progress.
    At M. Alexandrou Shaft, in progress are the excavation and temporary retaining works.
  • NIKEA Station: The works for the construction of non-bearing masonry walls at level -1 of the E/M floor slab and at level -3 of the platform slab, as well as the masonry plastering works at level -2 of the concourse level slab are in progress. In addition, in progress are works for the waterproofing of the outdoor perimeter walls from level -4 of the foundation up to level 0 of the roof slab, parallel to axis 15, between axes B-D. Works for the construction of the main station permanent lining (stage B) are still being continued together with the works for the construction of the slab and the walls of the north platform and the construction of part of the E/M floor slab between axes B-D and 12-13.
    At the northern entrance, the excavation and removal of excavation spoils at the 2nd level and at a section of the final excavation level, shotcreting at the 2nd level of the excavation and at a section of the final excavation level were completed. Moreover, improvement and acceptance of part of the foundation invert on either side of piles P 150-137, P 151-163 and P 126-P128, P164-167 have been completed.
    In progress are works for the temporary drainage of the foundation invert on either side of piles P 150-137, P 151-163 and P 126-P128, P164-167, as well as works for the installation of steel tubular struts at the 2nd excavation level at K.P. +21.87.
  • MANIATIKA Station: Excavation and Phase B temporary retaining works have been completed at the main tunnel of the station, while the in progress are works for deepening the temporary pumping station.
    At Mela Shaft, in progress are fencing – dismantling works and archaeological trenches.
  • PIRAEUS Station: Completed are the works for the drilling of soldier piles with the use of jet grouting at the northern entrance and in progress are the works for the diversion of an Φ630 sewage pipe.
  • DIMOTIKO THEATRO Station: In the underground section of the station, waterproofing works and works for the concreting of the floor and walls are in progress.
    At the entrance to Bakogianni Square, excavation works for the final level are in progress.
    In the NATM triple track tunnel towards the University of Piraeus, Phase C’ excavation works (excavation progress: 11.61/140m.) are in progress.
    In the NATM triple track tunnel towards DIMOTIKO THEATRO, Phase D’ excavation works (INVERT) (excavation progress: 45/63m) are in progress.
    The tunnel excavation has been completed by 58.45%.
