Project progress

The most extensive transport project of Thessaloniki, a modern Metro network of high aesthetics, comes to life. More than 650 persons of various disciplines work on a daily basis for Thessaloniki Metro, while a total of 16 worksite areas have been developed throughout the city by the contracting Joint Venture.

Thessaloniki Metro, a 9.6 km network, shall have 13 modern stations, 18 fully automatic and air-conditioned trains, as well as platform screen doors in all stations, ensuring the provision of the optimum services to the passengers and their maximum safety. A 50,000 m2 depot is also foreseen in the area of Pylea.

It is worth pointing out that by incorporating state-of-the-art technical features in combination with the most stringent quality and operability standards, Thessaloniki Metro shall become the most advanced Metro network in Europe.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

October 2007

  • The construction of Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos station and Sidrivani station commenced.
  • The construction of the diaphragm walls is in progress in Neos Sidirodromios Stathmos, whereas in Sidrivani station piling works in the north part of the station has been completed, while the construction of diaphragm walls commenced.
  • The works for the diversions of Public Utility Organizations (PUO) networks were completed in 6 worksite areas.
  • Eight (8) worksite installations have been completed.

September 2007

  • The archaeological excavations carried out on an overall surface of 5,000 m2 are at an advanced stage. Based on the archaeological study of the project, encountering antiquities on the section extending from NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS (New Railway Station) to PANEPISTIMIO is very likely. An archaeological investigation has already been performed to more than 350 spots along the Line, while several significant finds have already come to light.
  • The works for the diversions of Public Utility Organizations (PUO) networks were completed in 5 worksite areas.
  • The construction of the start-up shaft for the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) in NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS is at an advanced stage.
