  • THESSALONIKI METRO – The Metro Project is back to track. The contract for the execution of archaeological excavations was signed today

Further to the negotiations lead by the Minister of Infrastructures, Transport and Network Mr. Christos Spirtzis with the Contracting Joint Venture of Thessaloniki Metro, the following activities are being developed:

  • PATRIKIOU, NEA ELEVETIA, VOULGARI Stations and the Depot at the east end of the Metro Base Line are being constructed at an intensive pace
  • the two Tunnel Boring Machines (ΤΒΜ) dedicated to the Thessaloniki Metro Project are being assembled at NEA ELVETIA Station, in order to bore the last 1.9 km out of the 7.8 km of the two twin tunnels
  • the preparatory works for the construction of the 1.1 km long tunnel to connect the Depot with the Metro Base Line using the cut and cover method commence.

Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A, in the presence of Messrs George Dedes, Secretary General of Infrastructures, and Michael Simas, representative of the Contracting Joint Venture, signed today the supplementary contract amounting to EURO 25,000,000 regarding the archaeological excavations in Thessaloniki Metro Project. Through the signing of the contract, it will be possible to complete the archaeological excavations in the remaining fronts of the Metro Base Line, where works have been completed by 82%. Gradually, over 400 workers of various disciplines will be employed and engaged in the project, which is anticipated to bring to light many more aspects of the history of the city of Thessaloniki.

These evolutions constitute a tangible proof that the complex problems in which the Thessaloniki Metro had been entangled have been definitively solved and that the completion of this major project will be now unhindered. The14.5 km long Thessaloniki Metro (including the extension to Kalamaria currently under construction) with 18 modern stations is gradually speeding up its construction pace in many more fronts, offering working places and experience to an ever growing number of the country’s labor personnel.
