Based on the planning announced by the Minister of PEHODE, Mr. George Souflias last February, on June 7th 2006 Metro Line 3 extension to the western suburbs of Athens, from Aghia Marina (Haidari) to Piraeus, which concerns the construction of an underground tunnel 8,2 km long and the creation of 7 new Metro stations, was put to tender.
Today, Thursday September 28th 2006, the envelopes for the expression of interest were submitted by the following construction firms with regard to the first stage of the Tender:

- PANTECHNIKI S.A. – S.C. SOARES DA COSTA S.A. – ZAGOPE-C.E. S.A.
– CONSTRUTORA DO TAMEGA S.A. - ΑΚΤOR ΑΤΕ – SIEMENS AG – VINCI
- MICHANIKI
- J&P-ΑVΑX S.A. – FCC CONSTRUCCION S.A.
These consortia/companies will be evaluated by ATTIKO METRO by the end of the year, in compliance with the criteria set in the Tender Documents and those preselected will be invited at the second stage of the Tender to submit a Financial Offer for the project.
METRO EXTENSION TO PIRAEUS
The starting point of the Metro new extension to the Western Suburbs will be AGHIA MARINA (HAIDARI) Station and its terminal EVANGELISTRIA Station at Piraeus, with 7 new Stations; the underground tunnel will be 8,2 km long. This extension will serve both the Western Suburbs of Attica Basin (Aghia Varvara, Nikaia, Korydallos) and the district of Piraeus, which will be served by 4 new modern Metro Stations (Tambouria, Piraeus, Dimotiko Theatro and Evangelistria) and will upgrade to a significant extent the quality of life of people who reside in Municipalities which until the present time have not been within easy reach of the city centre and Piraeus. The said Stations will be located as follows:

Line 3 extension from Aghia Marina (Haidari) to Piraeus is expected to serve more than 160 000 passengers on a daily basis, who will be able to travel in a comfortable, safe and rapid way by the Metro. το Μετρό. Both the Port of Piraeus and the central and commercial area of Piraeus will be served in terms of transportation by three new Stations (Piraeus, Dimotiko Theatro and Evangelistria), while the benefits for the University of Pireaus in terms of transportation will be significant.
The budget of the project amounts to 570 million euros and the project construction is estimated to last 62 months upon conclusion of the contract. The tendering of the project includes:
- the implementation design,
- civil works for the construction of seven new Stations and 8,2 km of tunnel,
- the greatest section of the electromechanical equipment of the extension,
- trials, commissioning, personnel training and maintenance of the extension.
For the construction of the Stations, the cut and cover method, the NATM method and the cover & cut method with the use of diaphragm walls will be used on a case by case basis.
The construction of the tunnel will be carried out with the use of a Tunnel Boring Machine (metromole) in order to mitigate the inconvenience to the operation of the city.
