Thessaloniki project progress for the period of 2007-2009

PROGRESS OF WORKS FOR THE PERIOD OF 2007-2009

December 2009

 

The second Tunnel Boring Machine (ÔÂÌ2) continues its underground trip, thus having constructed 2,485m of parallel tunnel, while at the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM1) works related to the maintenance of the TBM's cutterhead are executed.

Works related to construction of the metal bridge at DEMOKRATIAS Station commenced.

The archaeological excavation survey at the following locations of the project is in progress: NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS, DEMOKRATIAS STATION, VENIZELOU STATION, SINTRIVANI STATION.

Íovember 2009

 

The first TBM (TBM1) reached SINTRIVANI crossover on 10/11/09, thus having constructed 2,714m of tunnel. The second TBM (TBM2) aproaches as well, having constructed 2,,125m of parallel tunnel.

Works related to the construction of piles for the metal bridge at AGHIA SOFIA Station were completed.
The development of the worksite of PATRIKIOU Station will soon commence.The said worksite will be one of the largest worksites since upon completion of the station the infrastructure for the future extension of the Metro to Kalamaria will be created.  

Ïctober 2009

 

The first TBM (TBM1) has constructed 2600m of tunnel and approaches SINTRIVANI Station, while the second (TBM2) has constructed 1700m. of parallel tunnel and moves towards AGHIA SOFIA Station.

Works related to the construction of the roof slab at PANEPISTIMIO Station as well as at the forestation of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS commenced.
Works related to the construction of the metal bridge at VENIZELOU and AGHIA SOFIA Stations are in progress.

September  2009

 

The first TBM (TBM1) has constructed 2300m of tunnel, while the second (TBM2) has constructed 1350m. of parallel tunnel.

The construction of diaphragm walls at PANEPISTIMIO and EFKLIDIS Stations is in progress, while the respective works at FLEMING Station commenced.
Works related to the construction of the metal bridge at VENIZELOU and AGHIA SOFIA Stations are in progress.
Works related to PUO network at the eastern section of the project are at a final stage. The surface worksite area will be reduced soon and the construction works will be executed below surface.

Áugust  2009

 

The two TBMs continue their underground trip underneath Egnatia street, thus having constructed a total of 2700m of tunnel.

The construction of diaphragm walls in the perimeter of AGHIA SOFIA, VENIZELOU, SYNTRIVANI, DEMOKRATIAS, NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS Stations and at the crossover to Stavroupoli.



July 2009

 

The first Tunnel Boring Machine (ÔÂÌ1) has constructed 1450m of tunnel, while the second one (ÔÂÌ2) has constructed 950m. of parallel tunnel.

Works related to the construction of diaphragm walls at EFKLEIDIS Station commenced.

The construction of diaphragm walls at AGHIA SOFIA Station is at a completion stage (completed at a percentage of 94%), while their construction at PANEPISTIMIO Station is in progress.

The construction of the roof slab at the cross-overs past SINTRIVANI Station was completed.

June 2009

 

The first Tunnel Boring Machine (ÔÂÌ1) has constructed 1040m of tunnel, while the second one (ÔÂÌ2) has constructed 375m. of parallel tunnel.

The construction of diaphragm walls at AGHIA SOFIA Station is at a completion stage (completed at a percentage of 82%), while diaphragm walls at PANEPISTIMIO Station commenced.
PUO network works at FLEMING and ANALIPSI stations are in progress, while preparatory works for the construction of diaphragm walls at EFKLIDI Station commenced.

Ìay 2009

 

 The first TBM (ÔÂÌ 1) has bored 800m. of tunnel, while the second one (ÔÂÌ 2) has constructed 200m. of parallel tunnel.

The construction of diaphragm walls at NEO SIDIRODROMIKO STATHMO was completed, while at an advanced stage is the construction of diaphragm walls at AGHIA SOFIA Station (66%).
Works related to the construction of new facilities of the 1st Laboratory of Special Professional Training in Thessaloniki  were completed in the in the area where the orphanage "Alexander the Great" was located in order make possible the commencement of works related to the construction of PAPAFI station.

April 2009

The first TBM has bored 600m. of tunnel, while on April 23rd the TBM named "Yorikas" started the construction of the second parallel tunnel.

The construction of diaphragm walls at Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos (completed at a percentage of 63%) and at Aghia Sofia Station (completed at a percentage of 63%) is at an advanced stage.


March 2009

The assembly of the 2nd TBM was completed and its trial running commenced.
The construction of diaphragm walls was completed at SYNTRIVANI Station, while it is in progress at NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS (completed at a percentage of 43%).
The worksite installation was completed at ANALIPSI Station and works related to PUO network diversions are in progress.

February 2009


The first TBM continues its underground trip without any obstruction, while the assembly of the 2nd TBM will be soon completed.
The construction of diaphragm walls was completed at DEMOKRATIAS Station and at the branching of the Metro Line to Stavroupoli, while the relevant works at SYNTRIVANI Station and at the forestation of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS are at a completion stage.
The Contractor's worksite installation is at a completion phase at FLEMING Station and the necessary PUO network diversions are in progress.

January 2009

 


The running ot the first Tunnel Boring Machine commenced, while the assembly of the second TBM is in progress.

The construction of diaphragm walls is at a completion stage:
- DEMOKRATIAS Station:completed at a percentage of 99%
- SYNTRIVANI Station:completed at a percentage of 81%
- Forestation of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS:completed at a percentage of 95%
- Branching towards Stavroupoli:completed at a percentage of 98%

The construction of diaphragm walls at AGHIA SOFIA Station is at an advanced stage (they are now completed at a percentage of 51%), while works related to the construction of retaining piles at PANEPISTIMIO Station were completed.

December 2008


The trial running ot the first Tunnel Boring Machine commenced.

The construction of diaphragm walls is at an advanced stage:
 - Forestation of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS:completed at a percentage 
   of 95%
 - DEMOKRATIAS Station:completed at a percentage of 91%
 - SYNTRIVANI Station:completed at a percentage of 92%
 - AGHIA SOFIA Station:completed at a percentage of 51%
 - Branching towards Stavroupoli:completed at a percentage of 92%

Works related to the construction of retaining piles at PANEPISTIMIO Station will be completed soon (they are now completed at a percentage of 91%).

Excavation works (completed at a percentage of 16%) at the train stabling shed commenced at Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos.

Íovember 2008


The assembly of the first Tunnel Boring Machine was completed.

The construction of diaphragm walls is at an advanced stage:
- NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS: completed at a percentage of 93%
- DEMOKRATIAS Station: completed at a percentage of 76%
- SYNTRIVANI Station: completed at a percentage of 91%
- AGHIA SOFIA Station: completed at a percentage of 45%
- Branching towards Stavroupoli: completed at a percentage of 72%

The construction of retaining piles at PANEPISTIMIO Station is at a completion phase: completed at a percentage of 81%.

October 2008


The assembly of the first Tunnel Boring Machine is at a completion phase.

The construction of diaphragm walls at Syntrivani will be completed soon (currently completed at a percentage of 86%).
In the area where the orphanage "Alexander the Great" was located, excavation works commenced for the construction of a building at the expense of AM where the 1st Laboratory of Special Professional Training in Thessaloniki will be housed.
Works related to the reinstatement of "Phoenix" Baths, which serves as the area where the archaeological finds of the 9th Byzantine Antiquities Department are stored, preserved and safeguarded, were completed. 

September 2008

At the end of the year the assembly of the first Tunnel Boring Machine is expected to be completed and its trial run will commence.
At the same time, the assembly of the second Tunnel Boring Machine is provided for to commence in the early 2009.
Preparatory works for the installation of the Contractor at EFKLIDIS & FLEMING Stations commenced.

August 2008

The assembly of the Tunnel Boring Machine has commenced at NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS Station.
The main construction works at NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS, DIMOKRATIAS, VENIZELOU, SYNTRIVANI and AGHIA SOPHIA Stations advance at a rapid pace.
Until the present day, the archaeological excavation works executed for the Metro construction have covered a total surface of 7000m2.

July 2008

The construction of diaphragm walls at DEMOKRATIAS Station is at a completion stage.
The construction of diaphragm walls at SYNTRIVANI Station is at an advanced stage (completed at a percentage of 71%), while the excavation works at VENIZELOS Station have recently commenced.
The construction of the raft at the start-up shaft of the two tunnel boring machines will soon commence at NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS.

June 2008


The execution of piling works is in progress (completed at a percentage of 35%) at the entrances/exits of VENIZELOS Station, while respective works at AGHIA SOFIA Station commenced.
Archaeological finds were revealed at the southeastern side of SINTRIVANI Station.
The excavation of the start-up shaft of the TBM in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS will be soon completed (by now it is completed at a percentage of 92%).

May 2008



The construction of diaphragm walls at SINTRIVANI Station (completed at a percentage of 55%) and at DEMOKRATIAS Station (completed at a percentage of 35%) is at an advanced stage, while the installation of piles at the entrances/exits of VENIZELOS Station commenced.
Worksite installation of the contracting consortium at PAPAFI Station is in progress.
The construction of the diaphragm walls at the Line cross-over for the future extension to Stavroupoli is at an advanced stage (completed at a percentage of 46%).

April 2008


The second Tunnel Boring Machine arrived in Thessaloniki.
Diaphragm walls at VENIZELOU Station were completed and works related to the installation of the metal bridge at the street level commenced.
Works related to the excavation of the forestation at NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS commenced.
The excavation of the start-up shaft of the tunnel boring machine in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS is at a completion stage.

Ìarch 2008


The construction of diaphragm walls at VENIZELOS Station (completed at a percentage of 98%),at SYNTRIVANI Station (completed at a percentage of 48%) as well as at DEMOKRATIAS Station (completed at a percentage of 12%) is in progress.
Works related to the diversion of the non-fire resistant pipe at AGHIA SOFIA Station are at an advanced stage.
Works related to the construction of the Line cross-over for the future extension to Stavroupoli are in progress.

February 2008


The main construction works at VENIZELOS and SYNTRIVANI Stations are in progress.
Works related to the diversion of the non-fire resistant pipe at AGHIA SOFIA Station are in progress.
PUO works in the area of PANEPISTIMIO Station are in progress and the worksite occupation of EFKLEIDIS Station commenced.
The excavation of the start-up shaft of the tunnel boring machine in at an advanced stage in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS.
The first parts of the second tunnel boring machine (ÔÂÌ) have arrived in Thessaloniki.

January 2008

The works for the construction of D-walls have started at the south side of VENIZELOU Station.
The excavation of the TBM start-up shaft is in progress.
The worksite occupation at PANEPISTIMIO station has commenced while new worksites will be soon installed at EFKLIDI and FLEMING Stations.


December 2007

 
The construction of the diaphragm walls on the northern side of VENIZELOU Station was completed and early next year relevant works will commence to be executed on the southern side of the Station.
The construction of diaphragm walls commenced at the Branching of the extension to Stavroupoli in the area of DEMOKRATIAS Station.
PUO network diversions were completed at 7 worksite areas.
Nine (9) worksites have been occupied until the present day and two additional worksites will be installed soon.

November 2007


One of the two TBMs arrived at Thessaloniki on Monday, November 30. The second one is expected to arrive in the beginning of 2009.






October 2007


The construction of Neos Sidirodromikos Stathmos station and Sidrivani station commenced.
The construction of the diaphragm walls is in progress in Neos Sidirodromios Stathmos, whereas in Sidrivani station piling works in the north part of the station has been completed, while the construction of diaphragm walls commenced.
The works for the diversions of Public Utility Organizations (PUO) networks were completed in 6 worksite areas.
Eight (8) worksite installations have been completed.

September 2007


The archaeological excavations carried out on an overall surface of 5,000 m2 are at an advanced stage. Based on the archaeological study of the project, encountering antiquities on the section extending from NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS (New Railway Station) to PANEPISTIMIO is very likely. An archaeological investigation has already been performed to more than 350 spots along the Line, while several significant finds have already come to light.
The works for the diversions of Public Utility Organizations (PUO) networks were completed in 5 worksite areas.
The construction of the start-up shaft for the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) in NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS is at an advanced stage.

August 2007

The works for the construction of VENIZELOS Station commenced.
A state-of-the-art machine, recently imported, is used for the construction of the diaphragm walls.



 

July 2007


The works for the relocation of Public Utility Organizations (PUO) networks in the seven worksite areas are in progress.
The works for the construction of the guides of the diaphragm walls have commenced at the Forestation of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS.
The inventory and inspection works of the buildings situated along the alignment of the Metro Line are at an advanced stage.


 

June 2007

 
The construction of the diaphragm walls at TBM start-up shaft in NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS and the installation of the necessary geomechanical monitoring instruments have commenced. By the end of the year, the Metro moles  shall arrive in the city of Thessaloniki where they shall be assembled to initiate their activities for the boring of the two independent tunnels of the Metro  Line.
The first stage of the General Final Design (GFD) of the Project, as well as the designs for the necessary traffic arrangements and the Public Utility Organization network diversions were completed. The approvals for the second stage of the GFD and the Detailed Final Designs are at an advanced stage.

May 2007


Preparatory works (relocations of PUO networks, archaeological investigations) are being continued along the entire network.



 

 

Ápril 2007

 
The works for the diversion of EYATH and Lighting networks in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS were completed.
The works for the construction of the guides of the diaphragm walls were completed at the TBM Start-up Shaft in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS.




Ìarch 2007


The archaeological investigation at the trenches of the Public Utility Organizations networks was completed.
The investigation trenches, the drilling of boreholes and the installation of instruments in the entire project are in progress.
Mr. George Yannis, Chairman of the BoD of ATTIKO METRO S.A. and Pr. Anastasios Manthos, Dean of the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki, on March 21st signed a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation regarding the construction of part of the Metro Project within the University Campus or underneath the facilities of the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki. This MoU settled issues of cooperation between the two parties, so as to ensure the unobstructed operation of the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki during the construction and operation of the Project.

February 2007

The works for the diversion of the PUO networks are in progress. The municipal lighting network in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS was diverted.
The first phase of the necessary traffic arrangements was implemented. It is worth mentioning that the selection of the Cut-and-Cover method will diminish the impact of the Metro worksite facilities on the acute traffic congestion problem with which the city of Thessaloniki is faced.

 

January 2007

The PPC network diversions in the area of NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS were completed. The diversions of PUO networks have commenced as of the beginning of summer 2006 and the relevant works are being executed by the Organizations concerned at the expense of ATTIKO METRO. In this was, thanks to the Metro the PUO networks are being replacement and modernized.
