ATTIKO METRO S.A. is a state company of high scientific training, which, based on reliable scheduling and systematic work implements the development of the Athens Metro network.

Nowadays, the two Lines of the Athens Metro are 53.2 km long in total (including 20.7km of suburban railway line from DOUKISSIS PLAKENTIAS Station to the Airport) with 36 modern Stations and serve approximately 775,000 passengers on a daily basis. In addition, Line 1 of ISAP serves more than 415,000 passengers. Therefore, combined with the Tramway and the Suburban Railway, the Metro System contributes to the development of a Modern Transit Model and to the enhancement of the every-day life in Attica Basin.

Further to the comfort, speed and reliability of its itineraries, the Athens Metro is renowned for the impressive archaeological exhibits at the central stations of its network, as well as the works of art of prominent artists, which embellish almost all stations of Lines 2 and 3. It is worth mentioning that thanks to the construction of the Athens Metro, the greatest archaeological excavation was carried out in Athens (79.000 m2), which brought to light more than 50,000 archaeological finds from the Neolithic period until the present day.

One of the most important and complicated projects of ATTIKO METRO S.A. is the Metro construction in Thessaloniki. The Contract for the Metro construction, 9.6 km long, with 13 modern stations was signed in April 7th 2006 and the construction works of the project are already at an advanced stage, while both TBMs commenced their underground “trip”. The two TBMs have already bored quietly and without any disruption to the functions of the city (December 2012) 11,300m of a parallel tunnel at a depth ranging from 16 to 31 meters. The experience, know-how and effectiveness of ATTIKO METRO S.A. guarantees the construction of a state-of-the-art Metro network, whose technological standards shall be even higher than those of the Athens Metro network. At the same time, the Ministry of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks announced in May 2009 the tender for the first extension of the Metro network to Kalamaria, while the second extension to Stavroupolis is at a planning stage. As a result, a complete network will gradually serve most of the city areas.

ATTIKO METRO S.A. continues the implementation of particularly significant projects, whereby 5 new Stations shall be gradually integrated into the network. At the same time, ATTIKO METRO S.A. proceeded with the implementation of new network extensions; the contract for the Line 3 further extension from Aghia Marina (Aghia Varvara Municipality) to Piraeus (7.6 km, 6 Stations) has already been concluded the objective being the Municipality of Piraeus to be served by 3 Metro Stations and to be connected to the Airport. Moreover, the Ministry of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks   investigates all possible funding methods for the construction of a new Line, Line 4, which is anticipated to alter dramatically the transportation map of Athens, since the estimated ridership is anticipated to reach 500,000 passengers/day, as well as to upgrade significantly life in Attica Basin. The new Line 4 shall be 33 km long, with 29 Stations (with a cost estimate amounting to 3.3 billion euros), which will cover the route Perissos – Alsos Veikou – Panepistimio – Evangelismos – Vyronas – Katehaki – Maroussi – Lykovrissi, as well as the areas Pagrati, Vyronas, Ymittos and Ilioupoli.
