COMMISSIONING OF THE SEVENTEEN (17) NEW THIRD GENERATION TRAINS IN THE ATHENS METRO NETWORK

ATTIKO METRO S.A. is pleased to announce that having completed all required tests and certifications, has delivered to the Urban Rail Transport S.A. (STASY S.A.) the seventeen (17) new trains, which are expected to be soon put into revenue service in the Metro network.

In September 2009, the international tender (budget: 155 million €) was completed and the relevant Contract was signed for the supply of seventeen (17) new Metro trains destined to serve the Metro network, following the recent commissioning – in 2013 – of ELLINIKO, ANTHOUPOLI and AGHIA MARINA Metro extensions, as well as the future Metro extension to Piraeus. HANWA-ROTEM Consortium was the Contractor of the Project, who gradually delivered the new 3rd generation trains to ATTIKO METRO S.A..

Particular emphasis was placed on the energy performance of the new trains, and the key criterion was the minimization of energy consumption. Thus, the 3rd generation trains of the Athens Metro will be exceptionally friendly to the environment. Moreover, A/C system and all other necessary technical features have been incorporated in the subject trains, rendering them capable to become compatible with the future technological improvement as foreseen to be implemented in the Athens Metro Lines 2 & 3.

In pursuing its construction activities, ATTIKO METRO S.A. is currently developing the Metro Line 3 extension to Piraeus, consisting in 7.6 km of tunnel and six (6) stations, as well as the Tramway extension from Peace and Friendship Stadium (SEF) to the centre of Piraeus, consisting in 5.4km of single track and twelve (12) stops.
