THESSALONIKI METRO – Signing of the contract for the construction of the extension to Kalamaria

ATTIKO METRO S.A. and the Contracting Company AKTOR A.T.E. signed the base contract for the construction of THESSALONIKI METRO Extension to Kalamaria, a project that has been integrated into the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) – Operational Program “Environment and Sustainable Development”, and is funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB); the overall budget amounts to €518 million (the amount of €400 million concerns the contract that has been just concluded).

The major transport infrastructure project ever constructed in Thessaloniki is now extending towards the area of Kalamaria with five (5) new stations (NOMARCHIA, KALAMARIA, ARETSOU, NEA KRINI and MICRA) and 4.78 km of underground line. Provisions have also been made for the construction of infrastructures that will allow the future extension of the Line towards the Airport, as well as for the development of a well-organized Bus/Metro Transfer Facility in the area of MICRA Station; a parking facility is also planned in the same area.

It is certain that the subject Metro System Extension will upgrade transport services in the Municipality of Kalamaria, since it will take just 15 minutes to cover the distance between MICRA Station and Thessaloniki city center. It is anticipated that this Extension will serve over 65,000 passengers on a daily basis. It is foreseen that the Extension of THESSALONIKI METRO to Kalamaria will be completed in five (5) years and will be commissioned in 2018.

It is beyond any doubt that the Metro Project constitutes a significant development opportunity for the city of Thessaloniki; to this end, ATTIKO METRO S.A. continues its methodical endeavor to plan new extensions in the area of Thessaloniki, while the designs concerning the Project Extension to Stavroupoli will soon be put to tender.
