ATHENS METRO – Briefing of the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Athens about ATTIKO METRO S.A. Projects

Mr. Kostas Mihalos, Chairman of the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Athens (EVEA) along with representatives of EVEA, visited today ATTIKO METRO S.A. premises, in order to be briefed in detail about the forthcoming developments as regards the Metro and Tramway Projects in the Athens Basin, in relation with their economic and development perspective.

Mr. Stratos Simopoulos, Secretary General of the Public Works and Mr. Nikos Stathopoulos, Secretary General of Transport, were present in the subject meeting; they both highlighted the decisive contribution of the Metro Projects in strengthening the commercial activities in the wider area of Athens. Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman of BoD and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A., along with the members of the Board of Directors and high ranking executives of the Company, presented in detail the following endeavors:

  • The forthcoming commissioning of the 7 new Metro Stations within 2013
  • The construction progress for all 6 new stations of the Metro Extension to Piraeus
  • The Athens Metro New Line 4, whose designs are at a stage of completion/maturing
  • The new Tramway System Extension to Piraeus

Mr. Mihalos expressed his satisfaction about the critical projects that are under execution in Athens and have a direct impact on the commercial and economic activities of the city; this was the reason why he congratulated the Management and all executives of ATTIKO METRO S.A. for the Projects’ high quality level and for the efficient scheduling exhibited by the Company itself.

Mr. Stratos Simopoulos, Secretary General of the Public Works, made a particular reference to the development perspective of the Metro projects that comes as a result of the flawless cooperation between ATTIKO METRO S.A. and the Ministry of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks. Moreover, Mr. Nikos Stathopoulos, Secretary General of Transport, stressed that the construction of a modern transport network through continuous extensions and constant enhancement of the means of public transport in the Athens Basin is of top priority.

In this context, Mr. Tsitouras stressed that “at this very moment, ATTIKO METRO S.A. Projects constitute the most powerful weapon we have to fight for development, so much needed for our country. Within next year, over 1,000 employees of various disciplines will participate in the works for the construction of the Metro and Tramway Extensions to Piraeus. The Metro Projects are of top priority, since they are directly related to the quality of life of middle class citizens, enhance the environmental indices, resolve traffic problems in the wider area of Athens and contribute in several ways in the economic growth of the city”.

Further on, Mr. Tsitouras made a clear reference to the extraversion of the Company, which, through its know-how and services offered in the framework of international competition, undertakes initiatives that have already started and are anticipated to be completed soon.
