Minister of Infrastructures, Transport and Networks, Professor Simos Simopoulos visited today THESSALONIKI METRO Project, accompanied by the Secretary General of Infrastructures, Mr. Yiannis Economidis and ATTIKO METRO S.A. Chairman of the BoD and Managing Director, Mr. Christos Tsitouras.

During his visit at the Company’s Premises and further to meetings held with representatives of the Contracting Joint Venture, responsible for the construction of the Project, with representatives of Thessaloniki Local Government and the Management Boards of the Employees’ Associations of the Contracting Joint Venture, Mr. Simopoulos underlined the State’s interest in the smooth continuation of the works for the construction of Thessaloniki Metro Project.

The Mayor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Yiannis Boutaris and the Regional Vice-Governor of Thessaloniki, Mr. Apostolos Tzitzicostas were informed by the Chairman of the Company about the smooth continuation of the Project and the payment of the salaries of the Joint Venture’s employees for days actually worked. The Chairman of Thessaloniki Municipal Council Mr. Panayiotis Avramopoulos, the Vice-Chairman of Urban Planning, Town Planning and Networks of Thessaloniki, Mr. Andreas Kourakis, the Vice Mayor, responsible for the Environment and Un-built Areas Directorate, member of the BoD of ATTIKO METRO S.A., Mr. Konstantinos Zervas, the General Director of the Macedonia – Thrace De-Centralized Administration, Mr. Panayiotis Georgiadis and the Manager of Thessaloniki Metro Project Department, Mr. George Konstantinidis attended the subject meeting. Meetings were also held with the Legal Representative of the Contracting Joint Venture, Mr. Mihalis Simas as well as the Chairmen of the Managing Boards of the Employees Associations Messrs. Charis Kyprianidis and George Kokkinos, and the members of the Managing Boards.

As stated by Mr. Tsitouras, ATTIKO METRO S.A. (AM), representing the Greek State, understands the employees who work for the Contracting Joint Venture, which is responsible for the construction of THESSALONIKI METRO, and the difficult position they are in due to the inability of the Contractor to pay them in time, and, thus, it proceeded with the payment of the salaries of the subject employees for days actually worked, and committed himself to fully address the delay in their payment.

In addition, he pointed out that any re-negotiation of the Thessaloniki Metro Contract is out of question, as well as that the archaeological investigation is anticipated to be completed in 2012, while in the next days the issue related to Papafi Station and the commencement of the pertinent construction works will also be typically solved. As regards the completion of the base line of the Metro currently under construction, Mr. Tsitouras stated that the approved time schedule, which foresees completion by November 2016, is indeed realist and can be adhered to provided that the Joint Venture meets its contractual obligations.

Moreover, Mr. Tsitouras stated that, further to coordinated actions, the Contracting Joint Venture has started taking delivery of materials intended for the resuming of works in the worksite areas, having secured the necessary working capital; he also stressed that ATTIKO METRO S.A. has being paying and still pays the Project Payment Certificates within the contractual time frame, and that it did not and does not owe any money for executed works. In addition, Mr. Tsitouras underlined that the funds for the execution of the Project have been secured.

In the framework of informing the local organizations and associations, the Thessaloniki Metro Management is organizing a briefing for Thursday June 14th, in order to inform the public and private associations of entrepreneurs. In addition, the decision made today in the subject meeting was for the agencies of the Local Government to be briefed once a month.
