THESSALONIKI METRO – Visit of Members of Thessaloniki Municipal Council at the Metro Worksites

The members of Thessaloniki Municipal Council were the first elected representatives of the Local Governmentguided through the Thessaloniki Metro worksites by Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman – Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A.

Members of Thessaloniki Municipal and Community Councils, as well as representatives of various agencies and journalists were informed on the progress of works at FLEMING and EFKLIDIS Metro Stations, as well as on the significant archaeological finds revealed at AGHIA SOFIA Station. All members of ATTIKO METRO S.A. Board of Directors (BoD) will subsequently participate in a special meeting of Thessaloniki Municipal Council in view of providing detailed information on all issues related to the project construction and the planning and design of the Metro extensions.

During today’s meeting, further to the presentation of technical data on the Metro stations construction method by Thessaloniki Metro Projects Manager Mr. George Konstantinidis, the members of Thessaloniki Municipal Council had the opportunity to see the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and circulate in the tunnel section using service wagons intended for the personnel.

Then, the Professor of Archaeology Mr. Michael Tiverios and the archaeologist of the 9th Department of Byzantine Antiquities, Ms. Stella Vassiliadou, guided the visitors to the archaeological trenches of AGHIA SOFIA Station.

Mr. Tsitouras made a statement to the journalists stressing that ATTIKO METRO S.A/ Thessaloniki Metro makes every possible effort to execute the Project at a rapid pace in absolute transparency.

“We are pleased that the members of Thessaloniki Municipal Council had the opportunity to become acquainted with this major project executed into the depths of the Thessaloniki through archaeological sites and densely populated areas.

The Project progresses at a satisfactory pace; we simply request the Municipality, the agencies and the citizens of Thessaloniki to embrace the Metro, so that we can deliver the soonest possible this unquestionably difficult technical project, which is so much needed by the citizens”.

The Chairman of Thessaloniki Municipal Council Mr. Panagiotis Avramopoulos stated that both agencies and citizens must believe in the project’s potential since its completion will change the financial perspectives of the city. “The Municipality of Thessaloniki will be by your side, at all times, to overcome difficulties, if any, so that a longed-for dream of the citizens can take shape”.

Thessaloniki Deputy Mayor and Member of ATTIKO METRO S.A. BoD, Mr. Konstantinos Zervas, addressed a brief greeting reassuring that all possible efforts are made towards the construction of Thessaloniki Metro in the shortest possible time frame.
