THESSALONIKI METRO – Breakthrough of the Second TBM at EFKLIDIS Station

Less than a month after the first TBM breakthrough at Efklidis Station, the second TBM also arrived at this Station, the first constructed station of Thessaloniki Metro, in full accordance with the respective time schedule.

On behalf of ATTIKO METRO S.A., the breakthrough event was attended by Mr. Konstantinos Zervas, BoD member and Thessaloniki Deputy Mayor, Mr. Giorgos Konstantinidis, Thessaloniki Metro Projects Manager, Mr. Michel Simas, Projerct Manager of the construction Joint Venture, and other high ranking company executives and worksite employees.

The even was also attended by Mr. Apostolos Tzitzikostas, Thessaloniki Regional Deputy Governor , Mr. Demosthenis Sariyiannis, Deputy Mayor of Kalamaria, Mr. Tassos Konaklidis, Chairman of TEE/TKM and other members of its Administrative body, Mr. Ioannis Mandrinos, President of the Traders and Professionals Association of Thessaloniki, Mr. Andreas Stampolidis, Secretary General of Thessaloniki Chamber of Small Industries.

The breakthrough was also attended by eighty members of the Association of Designers of Public Projects in Central Macedonia Area, headed by its President Ms. Maria Gregoriadou and the Secretary General Mr. Telis Tokatlidis. The members of the Association also visited the project for a technical inspection.

Responding to questions from journalists, Mr. Zervas stressed that the objective of ATTIKO METRO is to complete the project in the least possible time and cost, while the project’s modifications currently examined and aiming at its rationalization do not jeopardize, to the least, the smooth evolution of the project and its completion.

Mr. Konstanitinidis announced that the two TBMs have bored 4.6 Km of tunnel from the New Railway Station to Efklidis Station and that the Project works are expedited. With the organizational restructuring of the archaeological excavation works and the elimination of needless bureaucratic delays, in cooperation with the responsible archaeological departments, significant progress is achieved in the execution of the archaeological works. At the same time, the difficulties related to the construction of Analipsi Station have been overcome and the works are to commence in the immediate future.

Finally, Mr. Tzitzikostas said that the Metro is a project urgently needed by the city of Thessaloniki, which must be completed the soonest possible in full accordance with the relevant time schedules.
