he Press and Public Relations Office of PEHODE has issued the following statement:

Based on a decision issued by the Minister of PEHODE, Mr. George Souflias, the project related to the construction of the first extension of the Thessaloniki Metro towards Kalamaria, was put to tender today.
This project refers to the construction of 5 modern Metro stations and 4,8 km of underground line, also incorporating the construction of a Transfer Station and a car parking facility with a capacity of 1000 parking spaces at the terminal station of Mikra.

The budget of the project rises to the amount of 425 million euros.

Based on the relevant Invitation to Tender, the deadline for the technical firms participating in the Tender to express their interest in the construction of the project is June 22nd 2009. The tender will be carried out in two phases, is expected to be completed in June 2010 (provided that there will be no entanglements due to appeals, objections etc.), permitting thus the commencement of the construction works for first extension of the Thessaloniki Metro.

The scope of the project includes:

– the construction of five stations (Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini, Mikra)
– the construction of two single track tunnels using the underground  boring method (TBM)
– the Supply, Installation, Test and commissioning of the E/M and railway equipment
– the construction of a Transfer Station with facilities for buses and a private car parking building with a capacity of approximately 1000 places.

Some special E/M systems will constitute the scope of additional future tenders (budgeted at 40 million euros),raising thus the total budget of the project of the Metro extension to Kalamaria to the amount 465 million euros.
