  • ARRIVAL OF THE SECOND TUNNEL BORING MACHINE IN THESSALONIKI – In summer, the two Tunnel Boring Machines will set off their underground trip, starting from NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS

AM_Thess_TBM_apr08_MEDThe second Tunnel Boring Machine arrived today in Thessaloniki and it will be used in the construction of the city’s Metro system, the major public work under construction in Greece.

This is a state-of-the-art Tunnel Boring Machine weighing 400 tons and reaching 90m long and it will be used – in a parallel drive with the first Tunnel Boring Machine already installed in Thessaloniki- in the construction of two independent (single track) tunnels of the Thessaloniki Metro.
In summer, the two Tunnel Boring Machines will set off their underground trip, starting from NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS. The average scheduled daily production of the machine is 10m of tunnel, at a depth ranging from 16 to 31 m.

Today, Metro construction works are systematically and intensively carried out in Thessaloniki area at 11 worksites, while the first three Stations are already under construction, i.e. NEOS SIDIRODROMIKOS STATHMOS, VENIZELOU and SINTRIVANI Stations.

At the same time, thanks to the Metro construction, the largest unified archaeological excavation in Thessaloniki is under way and the most significant archaeological finds will be exhibited both in the Metro Stations and in appropriately configured areas of the city (e.g. Alkazar).
