  • CO-OPERATION BETWEEN ATTIKO METRO S.A. AND ALEXANDER S. ONASSIS PUBLIC BENEFIT FOUNDATION FOR THE PROJECT “RECONFIGURATION OF THE ATHENS CITY CENTRE ALONG THE AXIS OF PANEPISTIMIOU STREET”

On May 4th 2012, a Cooperation Agreement was signed concerning the donation by Onassis Foundation of the designs for the aforementioned Project which consists in the re-development of areas in the center of Athens from Syntagma square to Omonia square and along the axis of Patission street up to the Archaeological Museum, converting at the same time Panepistimiou street into a pedestrian walkway and extending the Tramway line from Syntagma square up to Egyptou square.

The Cooperation Agreement was signed by the Ministers of YPIMEDI and YPEKA (Messrs. M. Voridis and G. Papakonstantinou), the Chairman of ATTIKO METRO (Mr. Ch. Tsitouras) and the Chairman and Secretary of A. Onassis Foundation (Mr. a. Papadimitriou and Ms. M. Moshou).

In the framework of this cooperation, the A. Onassis Foundation issued a Competition Notice on May 21st 2012 concerning a European Architectural Competition. A Summary of this Competition Notice is available below to all interested parties.

It is stressed that ATTIKO METRO, by means of an earlier Memorandum of Cooperation dated March 4th 2011, has assumed the technical coordination, the planning and the management of the Project, as well as the responsibility for the Project’s design and execution as a Project Manager and, when all relevant designs are matured and the relevant funding is secured, ATTIKO METRO shall proceed to the compilation of the Tender Documents for the construction of the entire project, which shall include the extension of the Tramway Line, all area redevelopments, pedestrianizations and associated interventions, leading to the re-configuration of the center of Athens, as well as to all necessary traffic arrangements that will result from the aforementioned designs. ATTIKO METRO is already preparing the relevant transport and traffic design, while the A. Onassis Foundation is anticipated to assist in this effort by assigning the remaining relevant design services to an engineering firm in this framework.
