On November 21st 2008 ATTIKO METRO S.A. proceeded to the re-procurement of the project related to Line 3 Metro extension to the Western Suburbs, terminating in the area of Piraeus (underground tunnel, 7.6 km long, with 6 modern stations: Aghia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus, Dimotiko Theatro).

On February 13th 2009, 6 technical consortia/joint ventures expressed their interest in the construction of the project. On October 5th 2011, ATTIKO METRO S.A. proceeded to the unsealing of the Financial Offers for the Project concerning the extension of Metro Line 3 to Piraeus.

The classification order of the three bidding joint ventures, based on their Financial Offer, is as follows:

Based on the aforementioned Tender results, J&P – ΑVΑX S.A. – GHELLA SPA – ALSTOM TRANSPORT SA is the lowest-bidder of the Tender.

On March 1st 2012, the relevant contract was signed with the contracting joint venture J&P – AVAX S.A., GHELLA SPA, ALSTROM TRANSPORT S.A for the construction of Line 3 extension from Aghia Marina to Piraeus, 7.6 km long in total, with 6 modern Metro Stations. Attiko Metro S.A. was represented by Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman of the BoD and Managing Director, while the Construction Joint Venture J&P ΑVAX SA was represented by Mr. Konstantinos Mitzalis, Managing Director.

This Project constitutes a 730,000,000 EURO investment in areas of Piraeus Municipalities and other Municipalities in the wider area (Nikea, Korydallos, Aghia Varvara), which are currently faced with acute traffic problems and sub-standard services, in terms of Public Transport Modes.

The Metro Extension to Piraeus will serve approximately 132,000 passengers on a daily basis, while the distance between the Port and the International Airport will be covered by the Metro in just 45 minutes. Additionally, once the Metro becomes operational, the number of vehicles will be reduced by approximately 23,000 on a daily basis, leading to a respective daily reduction in CO2 by 120 tn.

Especially as regards Piraeus Station, a major Transportation Junction will emerge, connecting the two Metro Lines (Line 1 and Line 3), the Port, the Suburban Railway and the Tramway, which is also foreseen to pass through the same area, providing, thus, inter-modal transfers.

The Metro tunnel will be constructed using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) in order to minimize the inevitable disturbance to the functions of the Municipalities; during the construction period (2012-2017) 2,000 persons in total are foreseen to be employed in this Project.

The extension of the Tramway from Neo Faliro to Piraeus centre recently commenced, completing, thus, the direct connection of the coastal axis with Piraeus through the Tramway network. More specifically, in January 2013 the contract was signed between ATTIKO METRO S.A. and the Company THEMELI S.A.

Apart from the Line 3 Extension to Piraeus, ATTIKO METRO S.A will shortly be engaged in the following projects as well, namely:

  1. Extension of the Tramway network from Neo Faliro to Piraeus centre, completing, thus, the direct connection of the coastal axis with Piraeus through the Tramway. The construction of this specific project commenced in September 2013 by ATTIKO METRO.
  2. Conversion of Line 1 (ISAP) section form N.Faliro to Piraeus into an underground structure, with the addition of one new station in the area of Keranis Factory, unifying, in terms of functions and town planning the areas of Piraeus currently served by the surface ISAP Line 1. The designs pertaining to this Project are about to be completed enabling, thus, ATTIKO METRO S.A. to put it to Tender.
  3. Extension to the Tramway Network to Keratsini – Perama, following an underground alignment at a large part of Keratsini Municipality, running along the alignment of the old Perama tramway. The Advanced Concept Designs regarding this Project are underway.

Tunnel

6,5km of the tunnel of the extension will be constructed using the Tunnel Boring Machine, while the remaining parts at the beginning and at the end of the project will be constructed via the underground excavation method.

Shafts

8 ventilation shafts in total shall be constructed along the new Line and two shafts for the TBM’s entering/exiting.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

SEPTEMBER 2018

  • Two-track NATM tunnel: The works for the permanent lining of the tunnel’s vault have been completed.
  • TBM Access Shaft: The works for the excavation and temporary retaining of the shaft have been completed together with the works for the construction of the foundation slab and the perimeter walls.
  • Komninou Shaft: The works for the permanent lining of the connecting tunnel of the shaft have been competed.
  • AGHIA VARVARA Station: Granite installation works at concourse level and works for the installation of steel doors are in progress.
  • KORYDALLOS Station: Works for the installation of granites, masonry wall works are at an advanced staged, while floor screeding works, industrial flooring and other special flooring works are in progress.
  • NIKEA Station: Supplementary works for the construction of the non-bearing masonry walls at the platform level-3 are in progress, while E/M works are also in progress.
  • NATM Gallery of NIKEA: Works for the waterproofing of the gallery invert have been completed, together with the works for the excavation and temporary retaining of the gallery.
  • MANIATIKA Station: The works for the permanent lining of the foundation in the pumping station are at an advanced stage, while works for the permanent lining of the E/M slab and of the mezzanine floor slab have been completed.
  • PIRAEUS Station: The works for the installation and pre-stressing of the retaining struts have been completed, while works for the excavation of the 4th level of the main station are at a completion stage, and works for the installation of pre-stressing struts at this level are in progress.
  • ROLOI Shaft: Works for the diversion of stormwater network have been completed.
  • DIMOTIKO THEATRO Station: At the underground section of the station, concreting works at the floor, walls and the vault have been completed, while reinforcement, formwork and concreting works at the platform walls are at an advanced stage.

AUGUST 2018

  • KORYDALLOS Station: In progress are the works for the waterproofing and permanent lining of the station’s accesses, as well as the works for the installation of doors, metal panels and the dismantling of piles and cap beams.

Pissidias shaft: In progress are the works for the construction of the final lining of the bearing structure of the ventilation shaft, as well as the works for the installation of waterstops for the waterproofing of the perimeter walls of the main shaft.

  • NIKEA Station: The works for the installation of granite flooring, at platform level -3 are in progress.

NIKEA Station NATM gallery: Completed are the works for the waterproofing and temporary retaining, as well as the waterproofing works from KP 5+256.80 to KP 5+222.22. In progress are the preliminary works for the waterproofing of the NATM gallery, at its connecting point with the TBM tunnel.

Tzavella shaft: The works for the excavation and temporary retaining of the shaft are in progress.

  • MANIATIKA Station: At the station’s C/C, completed are the works for the permanent lining of the foundation (level -4), the E/M slab and mezzanine floor slab. In progress are the works for the permanent lining of propping from the ticketing slab level (-2) to the E/M slab level (-1).

South ventilation shaft of the station (Koumoundourou street): competed is the excavation and temporary retaining of the shaft, as well as the excavation and temporary retaining works of the connecting tunnel. The works for the connection of the ventilation tunnel with the main TBM tunnel (undisturbed cutting of rings) are in progress.

North ventilation shaft of the station (Dimitrakopoulou street): the excavation and temporary retaining of the shaft have been completed.

  • PIRAEUS Station: In progress are the works for the excavation of level 4 of the main station, as well as the works for the completion of the installation and pre-stressing of level 3 struts.

At Roloi shaft, the worksite installation works have been completed, while the excavation and temporary retaining works down to -6.00 are in progress.

  • DIMOTIKO THEATRO Station: In the underground section of the station, the concreting works of the platform parapet walls are in progress.

Korai square access: The concreting of the permanent lining of the floor has been completed. The waterproofing of the perimeter parapet walls and the dismantling of the 2nd row of struts are in progress.

Bakogianni square access: The concreting of the permanent floor cladding has been completed, while the concreting of perimeter walls of the permanent lining is in progress.

Electrical recess 4+867: The excavation and temporary retaining works, as well as the permanent lining works are in progress.

The excavation of all tunnels has been completed by 100%.
