Extension to Kalamaria

Thessaloniki Metro line is currently being extended towards the areas of Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Micra. This underground extension shall be 4.78km long with 5 new Stations. More precisely, the project concerning the first extension of Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria was tendered on May 6th, 2009 and the relevant contract was concluded on June 2013 with AKTOR ATE Joint Venture. The total budget of the project amounted to 518 million (400 million € concern the contract in question). This project has been integrated in the National Strategic Framework – “Macedonia – Thrace” Business Plan and is funded by the European Investment Bank. In June 2014, construction works have commenced at NEA KRINI Station, which is included in the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, and constitutes the second Metro worksite after the TBM startup shaft.

Moreover, the infrastructure for the future extension of the Metro Line to the Airport is foreseen to be constructed together with a well-organized Bus Transfer Station in the area of Micra Station. A car parking facility is also planned to be constructed in the same Station.

This extension shall service more than 65,000 passengers, proportionally reducing the number of trips by private vehicles. It shall only take 15 minutes to cover the distance from Micra Station to the center of Thessaloniki. This project shall upgrade the municipality of Kalamaria in terms of transportation and environment, improving at the same time citizens’ every-day life.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

May 2015

  • NOMARCHIA Station and Crossover: Construction works for the implementation of the traffic arrangements – Phase A have commenced, while works for the diversion of PUO networks are at an advanced stage. Piling works for the temporary retaining are in progress. The assembly of the building crane has been completed;
  • KALAMARIA Station: Works for the diversion of PUO networks are in progress;
  • NEA KRINI Station: Works for the retaining of the station are in progress (installation of struts at the 1st level);
  • MIKRA Station: The works for the construction of the temporary retaining system (pre-stressed anchors, bored piles) are at a completion stage, while works for the excavation of the NATM tunnel are at an advanced stage;
  • KRITI Shaft: Piling works for temporary retaining have been completed. Traffic arrangement works and worksite occupation works are in progress. Works for the construction of pile cap beams have commenced;
  • Preparation and approval of designs are in progress;
  • The expropriation of areas at ARETSOU Station, MIKRA Station portion and MIKRA Forestation is still pending.

  • KALAMARIA Station: Works for the occupation of the worksite and traffic arrangements are at an advanced stage, while works for the diversion of PUO networks are in progress;
  • NEA KRINI Station: The construction works of the Station’s retaining system (struts, cap beams, shotcrete, walls) are at an advanced stage. General excavation works are in progress;
  • MIKRA Station: The works for the excavation of the NATM tunnel have commenced. Moreover, the works for the construction of the temporary retaining system (prestressed anchors, bored piles) are at an advanced stage, while TBM start-up shaft excavation works is at a completion stage;
  • KRITI Shaft: Temporary traffic arrangement works and PUO networks diversion works are in progress. Worksite occupation works and piling works for temporary retaining have commenced;
  • Preparation and approval of designs in progress;
  • The expropriation of areas at ARETSOU Station, MIKRA Station portion and MIKRA Forestation is still pending.
