Extension to Kalamaria

Thessaloniki Metro line is currently being extended towards the areas of Nomarchia, Kalamaria, Aretsou, Nea Krini and Micra. This underground extension shall be 4.78km long with 5 new Stations. More precisely, the project concerning the first extension of Thessaloniki Metro to Kalamaria was tendered on May 6th, 2009 and the relevant contract was concluded on June 2013 with AKTOR ATE Joint Venture. The total budget of the project amounted to 518 million (400 million € concern the contract in question). This project has been integrated in the National Strategic Framework – “Macedonia – Thrace” Business Plan and is funded by the European Investment Bank. In June 2014, construction works have commenced at NEA KRINI Station, which is included in the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria, and constitutes the second Metro worksite after the TBM startup shaft.

Moreover, the infrastructure for the future extension of the Metro Line to the Airport is foreseen to be constructed together with a well-organized Bus Transfer Station in the area of Micra Station. A car parking facility is also planned to be constructed in the same Station.

This extension shall service more than 65,000 passengers, proportionally reducing the number of trips by private vehicles. It shall only take 15 minutes to cover the distance from Micra Station to the center of Thessaloniki. This project shall upgrade the municipality of Kalamaria in terms of transportation and environment, improving at the same time citizens’ every-day life.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

February 2018

• Kritis shaft: The works related to the excavation and temporary retaining of struts down to level -4 have been completed. The excavation and temporary retaining of struts down to level -5 are in progress.

• NOMARCHIA Station: The removal of reinforced concrete struts (roof level), as well as the excavation and retaining up to the 1st row of struts at the north access (at a part of Vas. Olgas Avenue) have been completed. The excavation of the north access (at a part of Vas. Olgas Avenue) and the backfilling of the widenings are in progress.

• NOMARCHIA Crossover: The construction of floors is in progress.

• ARETSOU Station: The construction of the station is in progress.

• NEA KRINI Station: Masonry works are in progress.

• MIKRA Station (& crossovers) – 2nd crossover: Works related to the waterproofing of the roof slab and masonry works have been completed. Plastering works are in progress.

• MIKRA Forestation: The construction of the permanent lining has been completed. Waterproofing works are in progress (sections 1 and 2).

• Terminal Shaft: The construction of the permanent lining has been completed, while the construction of the staircase inside the shaft is in progress.

• TBM tunnels: Completion of tunnel 2 boring works along “Kalamaria- Nomarchia” tunnel section by TBM2 (‘Elli’). In progress is tunnel 1 boring works along “Kalamaria-Nomarchias Crossover” tunnel section by TBM1 (“Frixos”).

Nomarchia Station: The implementation of phase C’ of traffic arrangements and the construction of retaining piles at the north access (at a part of Vas. Olgas street) have been completed. Plastering works are in progress.

• KALAMARIA Station: In progress is the construction of the permanent lining and waterproofing of the west access, the dismantling of reinforced concrete struts (roof level) and the Station backfilling.

• Pontou shaft: In progress is the excavation and temporary retaining up to level -4 of the struts.

• NEA KRINI Station: The construction of staircases is in progress.

• MIKRA Station (& crossovers): Waterproofing of the roof slab, the staircases and the masonry walls of the Station is in progress.

• MIKRA Forestation: The excavation and temporary retaining of the forestation has been completed. The construction of the permanent lining (sections 2 and 3) is under completion.

• Terminal Shaft: The construction of the permanent lining is in progress.

• TBM tunnels: Completion of tunnel 2 boring, interstations: ‘Kalamaria- Nomarchias Crossover’, using ‘Elli’ TBM2, and tunnel 1 boring, interstation ‘Aretsou – Kalamaria’, using ‘Frixos’ TBM1. In progress is ‘Frixos’ TBM1 sliding in KALAMARIA Station, its maintenance works, as well as the preparatory works for TBM launch in the interstations ‘Kalamaria-Nomarchias Crossover’.
