ATHENS METRO – Art Journeys in the Metro

Attiko Metro S.A. successfully incorporated art in citizens’ every-day life – for the first time ever in a public project – by displaying 30 contemporary works of art of reputable Greek artists, which embellish Athens Metro Stations.
Attiko Metro Art Program is evolving through new works of art displayed in both the existing Metro Stations and the new Stations currently under construction in the cities of Athens and Thessaloniki.
Three new works of art are exhibited in the framework of this Art Program at HALANDRI Station (artist: Rena Papaspyrou), AGHIOS DIMITRIOS Station (artist: Kostas Iraklis Georgiou) and MONASTIRAKI Station (artist: Lida Papakonstantinou).
More specifically, at HALANDRI Station, the work of art “Ikones stin Yli” (Pictures on Matter), created by Rena Papaspyrou, occupies a surface of 10.2 m. (width) x 2.7 m. (height) and is full of images familiar and unexpected at the same time. The mosaic tiles used in this work of art were processed in autumn 2009; Rena Papaspyrou incorporated therein her favorite design patterns dating back to ‘90-‘94 (see attached photo).
At AGHIOS DIMITRIOS Station, artist Kostas Iraklis Georgiou created a work of art “in memory of Alexandros Panagoulis” as least tribute to Alexandros Panagoulis in recognition of his great offer to the country. This work of art encircles the elevator at the station platforms and consists of various plexiglass pieces forming the portrait of Alexandros Panagoulis (see attached photo).
At MONASTIRAKI Station, the work of art “Chronos sta Heria mou” (Time in my Hands) created by artist Lida Papakonstantinou is developed on almost the entire surface of the station roof, occupying, thus, 134 m2 (see attached photo). This work of art consists of 324 plexiglass pieces, forming an impressive picture visible both from inside and outside the station.
