AGHIA PARASKEVI Station – One more modern Metro Station at the service of the citizens

Today, Thursday December 30th, 2010, at 12:00, Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman of ATTIKO METRO S.A. (AM), delivered AGHIA PARASKEVI Station to both ATTIKO METRO OPERATIONS COMPANY (AMEL) and to the public for revenue service.

This is the thirty fourth (34) highly aesthetic underground Metro station with three underground levels and two entrances / exits on either side of Aghia Paraskevi Street, at the intersection with Maria Polydouri Street.

AGHIA PARASKEVI Station is expected to serve 20,000 passengers on a daily basis and the distance up to Syntagma square shall be now covered by Metro within 13 minutes!!

Soon after the commissioning of this Station, Mr. Christos Tsitouras pointed out the following: “First of all, I wish to apologize to the Metro passengers for any delays occurred in the construction of the three stations of Line 3 (i.e. HOLARGOS, NOMISMATOKOPIO and AGHIA PARASKEVI). Today, the development of the northern branch of Athens Metro Line 3 has been completed with the addition of AGHIA PARASKEVI Station, while the second phase of the tender for the construction of Line 3 southern extension to Piraeus (7.6 km – 6 stations) will commence soon. Upon completion of this Project, Line 3 shall connect the major port of Greece with “Eleftherios Venizelos” Airport.

AGHIA PARASKEVI Station, where we stand today, constituted a particularly difficult technical challenge, since, within only a six-month period, the operation of a part of Line 3 was interrupted for the three underground levels of the Station to be constructed. For this reason, we must congratulate all “Attiko Metro S.A.” personnel and the personnel of the Contracting Consortium involved in this effort, who worked in a systematic way for the implementation of this Project.

However, the Metro system keeps on expanding. The works for the construction of all six stations in the Extension of Line 3 to Piraeus are to commence in summer 2011, while, at the same time, the designs for the first part of Metro Line 4 from Alsos Veikou to Evangelismos (8.3 km – 9 stations) are to be put to tender.

In addition, “Attiko Metro S.A.” is implementing a special soil-investigation survey due to the existence of idle lignite mines in the area post ANTHOUPOLI Station, in order to finalize the alignment of the Metro Extension to Ilion and Petroupoli.

In the years to come, the Metro system will become a significant development asset in the Attica Basin and, by reaching an ever increasing number of suburbs, our system will keep on facilitating the transfers of the citizens in the most rapid, comfortable and safe manner”.
