The event was attended by His Reverence Metropolitan Bishop of Neapoli and Stavroupoli Varnavas, Messrs. Lazaros Kyrizoglou, Mayor of Ambelokipi – Menemeni, Diamantis Papadopoulos, Mayor of Pavlos Melas, Stathis Lafazanidis, Mayor of Kordelio-Evosmos, Symeon Danielidis, Mayor of Neapoli – Sykea, Dimitris Saramantos, Mayor of Oreokastro, as well as by citizens of Thessaloniki.

During the event, ATTIKO METRO S.A. presented the Metro extension to Stavroupoli – Evkarpia, a project that includes 5.6 km of tunnel and 5 Stations (Neapoli, Pavlos Melas, Stavroupoli, Polichni, Efkarpia). This Project is anticipated to serve approximately 80,000 passengers on a daily basis. The budget of the Project amounts to 650 million EURO, including a necessary expansion of the Pylea Depot, a project which is already under construction. In terms of maturity, the Project is at the stage of preparation of the technical studies.

Said the Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. Mr. Christos Tsitouras: “Thessaloniki Metro is headed to the western suburbs of Thessaloniki, since the designs related to the extension to Stavroupoli are gradually completed, while the designs for the extension to Evosmos and Kordelio are at a maturing process. The designs are being prepared in-house by ATTIKO METRO S.A., as it happened with the extension to Kalamaria, a fact which ensures significant time savings. In less than a year from now, the designs for the extension to Stavroupoli will have been completed and provided that the necessary funding will have been secured, it will be possible to put the project to tender in the following months”.

The Secretary General of Public Works Mr. Stratos Simopoulos made the following statement: “We are here today in order to promote a constructive debate with the local authorities and the citizens. The Metro extension to the west will significantly improve the citizens’ every-day life and will create financial and commercial surplus in an area where such changes are so much needed”.

Finally, reference was also made to the maturing processes in relation to the Extension to Evosmos, a 4.4km project with 4 stations. The preliminary alignment has already been designed and the contract for the topographical surveys has been signed, while the geological and geotechnical surveys were recently put to tender.
