  • ATHENS METRO – Visit made by Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks in the Metro Extension to Elliniko

Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis, Minister of Development, Competitiveness, Infrastructures, Transport and Networks visited today the Metro Stations of Line 2 Extension to Elliniko.

Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A., briefed the Minister on the progress of the signaling works at the Metro extensions and Metro trains. Subsequently, they boarded a Metro train and made the journey through Ilioupoli, Alimos, Argyroupoli, Elliniko.

Mr. Kostis Hatzidakis right after the subject visit stated the following:

“Today, I had the opportunity to verify that the entire Metro extension to Elliniko has been completed and that the only works remaining to be executed concern the installation of the electro – mechanical signaling systems. These activities are already in progress and we are almost ready to hand over this project to the citizens of Athens by July 2013.

The METRO extension from Aghios Dimitrios to Elliniko is a very significant transport and environmental project, which is anticipated to decongest the southern suburbs of Athens. Approximately 13,000 less private vehicles per day will circulate on Vouliagmenis Avenue road axis, over 80,000 passengers will use this Metro Line on a daily basis, while it will take just 14 minutes to travel from Syntagma to Elliniko.

The Ministry’s objective is to waist not even one single day from the operation of the seven (7) new Metro Stations and, to this end, I will be visiting soon the worksites of the METRO extensions in the Western Suburbs of Athens (Haidari and Anthoupoli).

Finally, I wish to point out that the Metro works for the Port of Piraeus to be connected with the Athens International Airport (Haidari – Piraeus Metro Extension, with 6 new Stations) have already commenced. We will be able to visit this most critical Project in the next months”.

Mr. Christos Tsitouras, Chairman and Managing Director of ATTIKO METRO S.A. stated the following:

“As you can see, all past entanglements have been overcome and the 5.5km long Metro Extension to ILIOUPOLI – ALIMOS – ARGYROUPOLI – ELLINIKO will be handed over to the public in a 10-month period.

It is a very significant Project, an investment amounting to 400 million made in the southern suburbs of Athens that will ensure rapid, comfortable and safe trips, and will contribute to the enhancement of the subject areas. The operation of the 4 new Metro Stations will provide the citizens with four (4) underground passageways on Vouliagmenis Avenue and one properly configured Museum at street level to exhibit the archaeological finds revealed during the construction of ALIMOS Station.

ATTIKO METRO SA and the Ministry are making all efforts so that the Metro Stations in the Western Suburbs can be gradually commissioned in the first 6 months of the year.

Moreover, the six (6) first worksites for the Metro Extension to Piraeus have already been installed; this extension will give passengers the possibility to travel from the Port to the Airport in just 45 minutes.

Very soon, we will have once more the opportunity to visit together all projects of ATTIKO METRO SA and verify the progress made. All projects constructed by ATTIKO METRO SA are characterized by high quality and aesthetics and – most of all – they are always executed within budget”.
