  • ATHENS METRO – Completion of the Tender for the Automatic Fare Collection System in the Metro system

Within the framework of upgrading the quality of services provided to the passengers of the Athens Metro, the Ministry of PEHODE and ATTIKO METRO conducted a Tender with a value of 11.5 million euros for the installation of an automatic fare collection system in the Metro extensions under construction and in the forthcoming Line 3 extension to Piraeus.

Following the conduct of an international Tender, the Spanish company INDRA SISTEMAS was appointed as the Contractor of the Project; the said Company will install at the Metro stations currently under construction as well as at the future stations a system, which shall comprise among others the following items: a Management Center, 130 automatic ticket issuing machines as well as 130 ticket validating machines. It is pointed out that these are state-of-the-art ticket issuing machines (accepting bank-notes, 5 different types of coins, capable of returning change, as well as of issuing tickets of different value, etc.), which shall be fitted with the relevant infrastructure making them compatible with the future “smart card/ticket” scheme, aiming at the unobstructed provision of services to the passengers.

It is pointed out that the equipment and the machines will be linked  to each-other at a station level, as well as to the Traffic Management Center via a network. This will facilitate the system’s monitoring and control, in order to maximize the availability of the equipment and optimize the services rendered.

The Ministry of PEHODE and ATTIKO METRO will keep up the effort to upgrade the infrastructure of the Athens Metro System, aiming at providing services of constantly improving standards
