ATHENS METRO – Update of the Metro Development Study

ATTIKO METRO S.A., with the valuable assistance of the Traffic Police, conducts a series of surveys concerning the transfers within the Attica Basin; at 80 different locations on Athens road network 150,000 private vehicles drivers and motorcyclists will be interviewed. At each location, the survey will last up to 3 days only on working days (Monday to Friday) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
These surveys aim at updating data contained in the Metro Development Study (carried out from 1996 to 1999), which formed the General Transportation Study in Attica Basin; this study formed the basis for the scheduling and development of the Athens Metro network as well as of the remaining transportation systems of Attica Basin.

The product of these new surveys shall be a comprehensive data basis with information on the status of all transportation systems in Attica district; in addition, the transportation system needs for new infrastructurein the next twenty-year period will be recorded. The Ministry of PEHODE will utilize the new data both in the framework of the general Transportation Planning in the Attica Basin and in the planning of the future Metro projects until the year 2020 and 2030.

In particular, the surveys on the transfers, which are complementary to those conducted by OASA in 2006, which will be carried out are as follows:

Surveys of passenger trips using the Public Transport Modes of Attica district.

(a)Origin-destination surveys with interviews conducted in situ to motorcyclists, motorists and taxi passengers. This survey will be carried out at 80 locations of the Athens road network and approximately 150,000 drivers will be interviewed.
(b)Ridership Survey on the urban and the suburban railway network. It includes ridership measurements and passenger interviews in order to record the trip characteristics.

In addition, a survey will be conducted at 12 car park areas, which are mainly used as Park-and-Ride facilities to the Metro system.

Land use and Job position Survey as well as Socio-economic characteristics forecasts for Attica district.

In 2008 AM will also assign the preparation of a study whose scope will be the land use inventory, covering all building plots (approximately 80,000) in Attica district, as well as the survey of business and job positions for the total of businesses in Attica district (approximately 300,000).

Subsequently, based on these data, forecasts will be made concerning the evolution of population and the employment in Attica district for years 2020 and 2030.

The study of the traffic conditions in Attica district as well as the recording of the transportation needs will lead tothe expansion and modernization of the transport networks in Athens, significantly improving thus the quality of life of the citizens.
