Thessaloniki Metro

Thessaloniki Metro is the largest transport, development and environmental infrastructure project currently under construction in our country, an investment exceeding 1.5 billion euros for the two lines under construction. Upon its completion, the city of Thessaloniki will become a modern European city, with a decisively improved urban landscape and living conditions for the citizens.

According to the Attiko Metro S.A. planning, the project is expected to be commissioned within 2023.

Thessaloniki Metro (Basic Project) consists of a 9.6 km long line, 13 modern stations and a 55,000m2 Depot in the area of Pylea.

There shall be 18 fully automatic driverless and air-conditioned trains of the latest technology, as well as automatic Platform Screen Doors in each station for improved passenger service and safety.

It is expected that upon completion of the project, the daily ridership shall rise to 313,000 passengers. In addition and as a result of the project’s operation, the number of the circulating private vehicles shall be reduced by 57,000 vehicles / day, and the respecting CO2 emissions shall be reduced by 212 tons per day

Given the project’s construction incorporates the most recent technologies and the most demanding standards of quality and functionality, Thessaloniki Metro will undoubtedly be the most modern Metro system in Europe.

PROGRESS OF WORKS

February 2021

  • New Railway Station: Works for the installation of cable trays at the signaling and telecommunications technical rooms are in progress.
  • DIMOKRATIAS STATION: Works related to the installation of the air duct networks at level -1 are in progress.
  • VENIZELOU Station: Archaeological excavations are in progress at the southern entrance.
  • SINTRIVANI Station (Station and Crossover): The works for the installation of the data communication system are in progress, while works for the concreting of the temporary openings (eastern and western) at level -3 are at a completion stage.
  • PANEPISTIMIO Station: Cabling works/ works for connection of the platform screen doors control panels are in progress.
  • PAPAFI Station: Works for the construction of the guard’s house at Papafio Institution and works for the installation of cables at the signaling equipment technical room are in progress.
  • EFKLIDIS Station: The works for the construction of platform filling concrete have been completed, while works for the closing of the temporary opening of the station are in progress.
  • FLEMING Station: The works for the construction of the sound insulation at the ventilation shafts and the works for the closing of the temporary opening of the roof slab are in progress.
  • ANALIPSI Station: The works for the installation of fire-rated air ducts (OTE/SAF) at track 2 level have been completed, while works for the installation of platform screen doors, lighting cables and air ducts for the ventilation/air conditioning system are in progress.
  • 25 MARTIOU Station: The works for the installation of the lighting system are in progress.
  • NEA ELVETIA Station: The works for the installation of the ventilation/air conditioning system equipment and the outdoor lift are in progress.

DEPOT

Building Complex Ι: In progress are building works for the installation of panels and cable trays at level +69.00.

Building Complex ΙΙ: In progress are works for the installation of fire-rated glass-panes and gypsum boards in the control center area, as well as works for the insulation of air conditioning ducts at level +66.40, the installation of a fire-detection system at level +58.00 of the control center, and the installation of cable trays at level +61.40.

TRACKWORK: The works for the construction of the double crossover in Nea Elvetia crossover and the works for the construction of the floating slab/turnover 26-27 at the tunnel leading to the Depot are in progress.

  • DIMOKRATIAS STATION: Works related to the installation of fire fighting, sewage and water supply networks at level -2 have been executed.
  • AGHIA SOFIA Station: Preparatory works for the construction of masonry at levels -2 and -3 are in progress.
  • SINTRIVANI Station: The works for the installation of sub-frames to support the platform air duct inlets, the works for the installation of traction power equipment and cables, as well as cabling related works for PSDs have been completed.
  • PANEPISTIMIO Station: The works for the construction of the platform filling concrete have been completed. The works for the installation of ventilation & A/C related equipment are in progress.
  • EFKLIDIS Station: The works for the installation of Traction Power equipment and cables have been completed. In progress are preparatory works for the construction of platform filling concrete, as well as works for the installation of cabling related to the data communication system.
  • 25 MARTIOU Station: The works for the installation of equipment related to traction power supply, signaling and telecommunications are in progress.
  • VOULGARI Station: In progress are works for the installation of equipment related to traction power supply, signaling and telecommunications.
  • NEA ELVETIA Station: The works for the installation of traction power supply equipment are in progress.

DEPOT

Building Complex Ι: In progress are building works at levels +52.00 and +58.00, as well as works for the installation of floor-built in sockets at level +69.00.

Building Complex ΙΙ: In progress are works for the installation of piping related to the ventilation and A/C network at levels +53.00 and +62.30, as well as of piping related to the automatic extinguishing network using gas at level +62.30.

TRACKWORK: Completed are the works for the construction of the floating slabs between ANALIPSI and 25 MARTIOU Stations, as well as the works for the construction of the floating slabs/turnovers at 25 MARTIOU crossover. Moreover, in progress are works for the completion of the installation of prefabricated cable ducts and for the installation of the 3rd rail.
